Cat Breeds

Looking for the right breed of cat for you? Have a beautiful pedigree cat in your life now, and want to know more about the breed? From the elegance and grace of the Siamese to the wild beauty of the Ocicat, from the slightly wicked but utterly lovable ways of the Tonkinese to the cuddly warmth of a Ragdoll, CatHobbyist is the place to get the facts on pedigree cats.

We are introducing our series with a few of the most popular and interesting cat breeds, and will be adding new profiles all the time.

Featured Profile: The Abyssinian

Antares, an Abyssinian kitten, courtesy of PHMeowzersAlthough the Abyssinian is reputed to be descended from the ancient Egyptian cat, this is not documented. Many of the hieroglyphic depictions, statues and other representations are of cats with a similar body, head and presence. There are documented cats in England during the 1860's as having been brought back from Africa after the wars. The British left Abyssinia in May, 1868. There is also a cat in a taxidermy museum in Leiden, Holland that was identified as being brought in from India in 1834. Some genetic studies have indicated the Abyssinian must be a descendant of the Asian wild cats. Read more about Abyssinian cats here!

Recommended Reading

The CatHobbyist.com Bookstore features cat breed books from A-Z (ok, to Y, for "That Yankee Cat," the Maine Coon!). Here are two recommended titles that cover a wide variety of cat breeds.

From PHShowcat:

One of my favorite breed books is The Complete Cat Book by Richard H. Gebhardt. Gebhardt is a long-time CFA all-breed judge and writes very honestly about the breeds, their acceptance, the standard and more. Hard to find, but worth the search.

From PHChristy:

If you want to get blown away by how many unique cat breeds there are, then Barron's Encyclopedia of Cat Breeds: A Complete Guide to the Domestic Cats of North America by J. Anne Helgren is the book for you. It's loaded with photos, and covers cat breed traits as well as interesting and useful information on cat breed and color genetics.
