Roswell
By Kathryn Miller (sphynxlover)

My husband and I wanted a cat, but he is allergic to the hair. Because his allergies are to cat hair but not dander, someone recommended a Sphynx cat (a hairless breed). Roswell is a very special kitty. At 10 months old he already weighs over 8lbs and is 11 inches tall at the shoulder.

When we come home from work or just from being out, he likes to greet us at the door with a special meow and purr hello. His favorite toy is a sock with three knots tied in it. We discovered this when we realized that the toys the breeder sent with him were falling apart after one day. I knew that dogs liked to play with clothes and thought that the same could hold true for cats. So I took a sock that had been orphaned due to a sock eating washing machine, tied three knots in it, and gave it to him. He took to it right away. The knots give him something to chew on instead of our hands. That also came in handy when he was teething as a kitten. His second favorite toy is a cardboard tube, such as an empty paper towel roll. He will bat that around for hours. I discovered this one day when I accidentally dropped one on the floor on the way to the trash can. He quickly claimed it.

Roswell is very fascinated by our snakes (two ball pythons). He will sit on the bench at the table and just watch them for hours. I think he wanders how they move around without the use of arms or legs. It's okay though because he can't get into their cage. He goes nuts when we bring home rats to feed the snakes because he wants to "play" with them.

While he's fond of people, especially kids, he's not too keen about other four-legged animals. We had another cat over for a visit once, and he almost went nuts on her. He hissed, growled (yes, he growls :) ), and basically let her know that this was his place and she was not welcome.

He likes to just roam around and talk and talk. He has different meows for everything. One for hello, one for sad, one for confused, one for "What's the matter?", one for "I'm getting upset, so leave me alone!", etc. He also seems to know when someone is sick or injured. He will go to that person and rub his head on them, and then sit by them and purr for the longest time. When he can see you are sad about something, he will even roll around on the floor or do something cute to get you to laugh.

He has a curiosity problem though. He likes to try getting into things that are dangerous for him. One time he even chewed through speaker wire from our surround sound system. Fortunately it wasn't on at the time or he would have been one messed up kitty cat.

Since he is hairless, we have a few special care things we have to do for him. He can't be an outside cat because he is susceptible to hot and cold temperatures. The reason is that he has no hair to protect him from the elements of nature. He also has to be bathed on a regular basis because he has no hair to keep the dirt off of his skin. Even though he is hairless, he skin is soft like a baby. He feels like a warm water bottle when he sits on your lap. He loves to snuggle with people.

All in all he is a great cat and I would not trade him for anything.
