Diabetes is a disorder of the body's use of the hormone insulin, which causes a cat to be unable to properly process the energy from food. Untreated it can lead to blindness, kidney failure, and death.

It is important to realize that with good veterinary care and a dedicated owner, diabetes is a treatable disease. CatHobbyist.com is very please to welcome Dr. Eric Averill as our guest at a special chat on Feline Diabetes to discuss the care of diabetic cats.

Dr. Averill is a graduate of Cornell Veterinary College and Boston University School of Public Health. He has over thirty years experience as a veterinarian, the last five in feline practice. He is a Fellow of the American Association of Feline Practitioners and the Academy of Feline Medicine. His practice is in Plymouth, Massachusetts.

If you are looking for more information on feline diabetes, you can do no better than begin at the wonderful website felinediabetes.com. We also invite you to the CatHobbyist.com Message Boards, where you can visit the Feline Health Forums and talk with other cat owners with diabetic cats.

How to Attend

This event will be held in the NEW Cat Care Central chat room. To access the room:

  • If you are a registered user of our site, simply follow this link: Cat Care Central, and log in with your username and password. (Forgot them? Click here!)

  • If you are not already a registered user of the site, registration is not required - simply go to chat.pethobbyist.com and use the "Guest" log-in option, then select Cat Care Central as your chat room.

    There is nothing to download or install, but the system does require you to have java enabled in your browser settings. We strongly suggest you access the room before the chat, so you have time to address any difficulties you might have. You might want to drop by one of our regular weekly chats as a test run ANYTIME AFTER WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 3. Prior to that date, our chats will still be held in our old chat rooms. If you have trouble, please visit our Chat Help Area.
